"keep distance" (2020) by Laura GuildA

is a large macramé curtain installation made from commonly-used red and white warning tape strips.

This work is inspired by the current climate in which people are on-guard, surrounded by barriers, and have to adhere to specific distances and pathways in public spaces.

It was conceptualized as a kind of door that visitors can walk through to remind them to enter separately.

The macramé piece is divided into two parts which only come together at a certain point. This is where the square knots from a so-called "Buddhist treasure" mesh separate into individual strips.

Following the line of the strips, we have all connected like knots, but we now have to be mindful to keep our distance - have a proximity, but be separate.
